Troubleshoot Error Messages In Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is one of the most popular email applications, and we use it to send and receive emails, create tasks and appointments, assign tasks and perform various other functions. It is quite popular, just like other applications from Microsoft. Even though this email application is useful, there are several error messages attached with this program.

We might sometimes encounter certain error message when we open Microsoft Outlook. There are several error messages connected with Microsoft Outlook, and you might see an error message like “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Outlook requires Outlook Express 4.01 or greater”.

When you receive this error message you would definitely try to install Outlook Express to your computer. This can be done by getting to the Control Panel and clicking the Add/Remove programs icon. If you try to find a solution to this problem using the knowledge base on Microsoft, you will find a solution only for Windows 2000, and you cannot get any solutions for Windows XP. If you have Windows XP installed on your computer, and you receive an error message about Outlook Express, you will have to fix this issue. This can be done by contacting the Microsoft solutions center.

  • You can click on Start button on your desktop. Now click on Run, and in the text box, type regedit and press the Enter button. You need to go to the following location in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{registry key}.

  • The registry key must be highlighted, and under Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and Mail News, you will find REG_DWORD values IsInstalled. Check whether both of them are set to 0. If so, you can change them to 1. To change this value to 1, you can right click REG_DWORD values and choose Modify. In the field ValueData form you can enter 1 and click on OK. You can close it and open Microsoft Outlook.
  • If you have the registry key with you, you will find it under Installed Components in a folder named AutorunsDisabled. You can download it and install Autoruns, which you‘ll find in the resources section.
  • Check for the Autoruns.zip file, which you can right click, and select Extract All. Now, save it. Click on Extract button and run Autoruns.exe. Make a check mark next to Outlook entries, and exit Autoruns before starting Outlook.
